Well done Malc , and as a Scientist i dont care there was a Cylon on there , i think Curio's lack of involvement in the last few days and Lace's odd behaviour today may have been more of a hinderance to them - since it really should have been the Military trying to drive things.

I'm disapointed that the dead thread doenst have pages of people explaining to Kovacs what was going on :-)

If that's in character and an attempt to try and coax some sympathy for you well done.

If its not I'm really sorry you feel that way - please don't take it like that its just a game (besides who else are we going to get to fix the fan inside Sweet Chariot and stress test the electrics ?)

I again hope this was just playing in character.

Oh and congrats to Mr Dom

PS, my 'proof' that LS isn't a cylon, and is probably telling the truth:

With reference to my nice color-coded list above, the previous vote state was:

zeppo: 1 (Squirt)
joans: 4 (Curiosity, LaceSensor, Mr Kissyfur, Malc)
lacesensor: 6 (Doctor Glyndwr, Mr Dave, Zeppo, Mr Russell, Joans, Zaphod64)

Now that to me looks very much like LS is not on the same team as the red guys, hence he is not a cylon.
THIS was why I threw a wobbly at that point and said LS was not one :)

*smug mode on*

(Malc is either not a cylon, or possibly is trying to avoid the block vote shenanigans, but I reckon 4 cylons is a good number, so they are all guilty)

Thinking about it, the problem is that good play isn't rewarded, as it leads to losing. Which means when Mr Russ drops the odd clanger, there's no reason to point it out.

I will but not really got time right now - have a read of the wiki page

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_%28party_game%29

I like the maths behind odds

Quote:
Mathematical study

Mafia is a complicated game to model, so most analysis of optimal play has assumed both: (a) that there are only townsfolk and mafiosi, and (b) that the townsfolk never have a probability of identifying the Mafia that is better than chance. Early treatment of the game concentrated on simulation,[78] while more recent studies have tried to derive closed-form equilibrium solutions for perfect play.

In 2006, the computer scientists Braverman, Etesami and Mossel proved that without detectives and with perfect players the randomized strategy is optimal for both citizens and mafia. They showed that when there are a large number of players and the win probability for either side is 50%, the innocent's lack of information means that the Mafia numbers need only double when the total number of players quadruple for the win chances to remain even.[66] With simulation, they confirmed that 50 mafiosi would have almost a 50% chance to win among 10,000 players, and that when m mafiosi remain among P total players:

The Mafia's chance of victory, W(m, P) \approx \frac{m}{\sqrt{P}} —When: \frac{m}{\sqrt{P}} \le 40%

As the Mafia's concentration increases beyond 40% of the square root of total players, the chance of a Mafia win grows less linearly with concentration, but converges to near certainty by the time P < 3m2.[79]

If any detectives are added to the game, Braverman et al. proved that the number of mafiosi must remain at a fixed proportion of the total number of players for their chance of winning to remain constant.[80]

In 2008, Erlin Yao of the Chinese Academy of Sciences derived specific analytical bounds for the mafia's win probability when there are no detectives, W(P, m) when m mafioso remain among P total players:[81]

\sqrt\frac{2(m-1)}{P} \le W(m, P) < \frac{m}{\sqrt{P}}

For example, four mafioso have a 50% to 100% chance of beating twelve innocents in this model.

I would also suggest these pages on the Mafiascum wiki

http://mafiascum.net/wiki/index.php?tit ... ting_Stage

Quote:
When one is voted for they are closer to be Lynched. Being lynched is something to avoid, so a player who has a greater chance of being lynched will talk more to defend himself. The more someone talks, the more they reveal. If a Mafia member or other Scum reveals too much, he gives himself away. So voting for someone one thinks is a member of the mafia can lead to discovering who really is a member of the mafia.

However often one has no real information to go on at the beginning of a game. In this case, one cannot actually do better than acting at random -- and someone has to do something, or nothing will happen. It is assumed here that voting is the only action one can take at this stage of the game with any real effect.

It comes down to one simple thing: Don't pass up an opportunity to get information.

That's aside from the way that novoting would mean that the odds of an epic win would be even longer.

Anyway, thanks to Grim... for running a fascinating game.

That was cool, but I'm a) rubbish at working out who is who and b) often unable to join in every now and then. I might stick to being an amused bystander in future, rather than a playe.

I well enjoyed that. Having never been a baddie it's fascinating how differently the play style is and how difficult it is to still pretend to be a townie. I had a big grin on my face still knowing Malc was our last cylon though and only mr Dave voiced an inkling once he claimed as curious scientist.

But well done - well done - to mr dom for getting all 4 of us in one post right early on.

I really wasn't happy with the choices and missing that he did, it didn't sit right with me. But the thing is, I wasn't trying to find the cylons, only to survive. If I rock the boat, I get killed at night, so I have no reason to do so to help the military people. And also, if I try and force the issue at day based on a hunch, when we have a pretty good case for winning there, it could easily back fire and get me killed. I've seen Malc play before, and I know how persuasive he can be.

Similary, when you cocked up on day 3, I spotted it - I was the only one in a position to - but my survival was more important than killing you. And again, when the Curio/zeppo/Lace/Joans thing arose, while everything I said there was accurate (Leave the third 'pilot' alive, and suddenly the pilots start disappearing until you no longer have the abilty to take the risk of killing them was the precise reasoning behind my insistance it was vital we sort it out there and then.) there was also the point that the killing the pilots made more space for me at the end, which was a good thing, and more important than trying to get a cylon.

Hmm - the rules are somewhat open for interpretation there, but I'd say that playing up to your (still available) epic win condition would mean that it wasn't - that's part of the reason they existed.

In hindsight, "enjoy the rest of the game" does sound a bit sulky, but I think I knew the game was up and I really didn't expect to get a chance to play any more (hence my surprise that you managed to take until sunday morning to finish me off).

I now wish that I'd roleplayed the entire game as an electrician and spent the time fitting fans to the ship

By day 3, we'd lost 4/5. so that needed one night where both the psycho and the cylons hit one another, and a second night where they somehow managed to hit noone. On the balance of probability, that ranks very, very low, given that if I attempt to expose a cylon, I'm quite likely to get hit rather than the psycho, and that will put us over the 5 needed to lose the epic win.

I really enjoyed that, for a while I thought we were boned, but we managed to hold on. I wasn't sure how many people bought me being a curious scientist, and how many just played along as it was irrelevant to their win condition.

Good game :)

Malc - I was so sure earlier that you were a colon, then almost talked myself round, and today I have been mostly offline, but figured as long as I got on the ship I win a bit, so I wasn't bothered to pursue it, and besides it was a truly masterful display of misdirection by pretending to be the investigator.

Hurrah to the colon and the survivors, we rock!

Anyway - much thanks to Mr Grim... for another fun & fruit game!

Hmm - you could do this with space cows.

Your either crew / Space cow / Reaver.

Crew need to get X space cows to the planet X days away.
Reavers want to steal and butcher the Space cows for their spacey goodness.
Space cows want to live.

Ah. The timeout.

That was always going to be an option, and I was going to pm Grim... my action as close to the cut off as possible. Then I got really busy with work and was actually a few minutes late with the pm. So there was almost a timeout for real. Zeppo would have lived, and I probably would have been killed.

Well played to Malc for the bluff, though had I been here you were absolutely toast. There would have been no way in hell I would have let you get on that spaceship, as the only possible remaining cylon!

No I bloody wasn't... I was the Military, hence I lost because I wasn't around to turn everyone against Malc and his devious Cylon ways.

It kinda was, as Dave mentioned above. After the epic win conditions were done away with, the scientists didn't care if the Cylons got off-world or not, and making a fuss about who was or wasn't a Cylon might get them killed overnight or suspected of being a double bluff and being a toaster themselves. Our plan was to rely on the scientists losing all enthusiasm for the Cylon hunt once the epic win conditions were off the table. And it worked.
