Other than the Marxes, Lehrer is probably the greatest influence on my sense of humour. I still remember discovering his work as an awkward teenager, listening to them constantly, and passing the tapes to all my friends who likewise became fans.

When one of my closest friends got married, since the happy couple had met the scout jamboree, I felt it only right and proper to finish my best man's speech to them with a verse from his Scouting anthem, "Be Prepared":

I remember his Postman book being my absolute favourite in Primary school. All of those little letters and other bit to pull out and read. Magical.

Indeed. Amazing legacy. Joyful, inventive, timeless. My kids loved them like I did and I'm sure their children will too.
