A steam powered robot. You'd have thought they'd have noticed that, wouldn't you?

Tbf, seeing as Grimothy owns a traction engine, I’m surprised there aren’t more steam related puns

I was going to post about my steam-powered toy boat, but compared to Grim…’s massive engine I thought my little efforts would be pis(s)t’on.

32 - Thunderbolts*. Despite not really being interested (I hadn't seen any of the recent film or TV stuff that leads up to it), I quite enjoyed this. The first half didn't feel too Marvel and they didn't linger on the stuff that did. Unlike the early films, it didn't drag. A generous 4/5.

It’s enjoyable fluff. Made by the same team that did Top Gun Maverick
Zips along, well shot and paced. I really didn’t want to see this, but curiously, my OH did

Saw Thunderbolts. Liked it but, fuck me, I hate dream sequences.

Ballerina. Hmmm, not impressed. As a big John Wick fan (more the original the others but still) I was expecting some decent action but it all seemed a bit, I don’t know, lacking. There’s a decent sequence towards the end, mind, but there’s some “comedy” bits in it that really rubbed me up the wrong way. It’s more “The Continental” than “John Wick”.

33 - Brick. A couple wake up to find every window and the door to their apartment is bricked up with this mysterious indestructible material. I liked it. It was mysterious enough. Was in German. Glad I watched it without the English dub. 3.5/5

Family viewing updates!

We watched Mission Impossible: The one Where he climbs Burj Khalifa - I think that's Ghost Protocol

It was as good as I remember, which is fine, they're decent films and all that, but I find the competence and 'fine-ness' a little boring and it doesn't seem like the makers are taking many chances with the film.

The kids then chose Little Man as our Netflix app seems to be promoting it for some reason. When I asked them what it was about, their description made it sound like a family friendly romp of mistaken identity. When we sat down to watch it I realised it was a mid 2000s Wayans brothers film (ooops) about a violent but comedic criminal (ooops again) and had a number of rude jokes about sex, boobs, violence, gambling and race (Lady T was out with a friend, so I don't think this will cost me anything) - overall it was not unfunny but also ppppprrrrrobably not the right level for 8 and 10 year olds, and it was rather mediocre as a film. That being said, I didn't hate it.

I quite liked Taika Waititi after he'd broken through and achieved mainstream attention and success, but for some reason that I can't really articulate, I have lately found I feel weariness towards him that's possibly turning into a real meh-ness (sorry bruz if you're reading this).

My eldest has been watching the Avenger films and I'd forgotten how good they were, and how much I enjoyed them, before it all just turned into TOO DAMN MUCH and there was a new film/series/internet short every other month.

This weekend it was Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. I hadn't seen this one before. It was silly and fun, with a load of old guff in the mix too. The Big Stunt (tm) in this one came right at teh beginning and had Tom Cruise hanging on to the outside of a plane as it took off which was both ridiculous and cool.

I did enjoy the ending even if it was rather silly.

35 - Megan 2.0. Reminded me of how T2 made me feel because it got rid of a lot of the horror elements and replaced it with action. But it was entertaining and the fight sequences were quite well done. It's ridiculously stupid but I didn't mind that. A generous 4/5 (based on entertainment value rather than quality).

Saw an entertaining old '30s movie starring Edward G Robinson as a mild-mannered doctor that decides to become a jewel thief and operate a gang. Amusingly it is called 'The Amazing Dr. Clitterhaus'. Fun film with a surprisingly dark little twist in it. Bogart plays a fantastic heel in it. Apparently Bogart hated the film because people kept sniggering about the title around him, which is hilarious.

Nearly run out of Edward G Robinson movies now. There's been so many great ones I've enjoyed, but I'll put my favourites down as...

A Slight Case of Murder - Hugely successful 'Beer Baron' Edward G Robinson attempts to go legit following the repeal of prohibition. Just one problem. The beer's terrible. Utterly hilarious movie with some Simpsons level gags.

Double Indemnity - The quintessential noir movie. An insurance agent is drawn into a plot to kill a femme fatale's 'abusive' husband. Fatherly mentor Robinson begins to suspect all is not kosher. Incredible film.

Key Largo - Eddie G holds a small bed and breakfast down in the Florida Keys hostage with his gang as he lays low following a jail-break. His only problem is that he has Bogie and Bacall to contend with, and a hurricane bearing down on them! A magnificently snarling and alternately cold-bloodedly cruel and hilarious performance from Robinson.

Scarlet Street - Meek, lonely cashier Edward G Robinson is a talented but unknown amateur painter who rescues a young woman from an abusive boyfriend. Smitten, he lets both woman and her boyfriend into his life with disastrous results. The evil boyfriend is superbly played by Dan Dureya, better known at the time as 'the heel with sex appeal' who received an incredible amount of fan mail from women - much to his bemusement. So iconic the Simpson's monorail peddling 'Lyle Langley' was basically directly based on him, straw boater and all. Super-dark ending.

The Whole Town's Talking - A meek mild-mannered clerk gets into a jam when he's found to exactly resemble a notorious bank robber. Cleared by the police and given a signed passport by the police department stating he's not the infamous killer, he's all ready to go back to the quiet life. Only problem is that the at large bank-robber has taking notice and has a cunning plan. Some inventive and surprisingly seamless early split-screen and double work, along with superb acting, convinces you that Edward G Robinson is entirely two different people inhabiting the same room at the same time. Great fun and a hugely satisfying ending.

If y'all bored out there, why not check out the above delights? None more than 95 minutes of fast-paced entertainment. "NYAAAH! SEEE!"

36 - Marshmallow. A neat spin on the Camp Crystal Lake sort of horror movie. I enjoyed the overall concept which wasn't exactly what I was expecting. Bit of a slow start maybe but decent. 4/5

I watched Garfield with my daughter while we ate some takeaway pizza, as the boys were watching something else with their mate and Lady T was out.

It's from the early ish 2000s and Bill Murray did the voice, and it was decent. The CGI is a little dated but that's not to say it was bad, and on the little TV screen in the bedroom it was fine really. A good, simple kids film with some funny bits and some charm. I really thought it was going to be super shit but it was pretty good really. And it was nice and short.

Jennifer Love Hewitt was in it too, and she looked splendid.

Fantastic Four: First Steps — Marvel’s bold experiment in cosmic babysitting.
Pedro Pascal is Reed Richards, a stretchy genius who looks perpetually lost in a philosophical TED Talk. Vanessa Kirby is Sue Storm, glowing, powerful, and 97% done with everyone’s nonsense.
Galactus rolls in like, “I’ll trade you Earth for one human infant,” and somehow that’s not the weirdest part.

Plot: Fever dream.
Visuals: Space Pinterest goals.
Chemistry: Enough heat to power the Baxter Building.

Basically, it's Fantastic Four if Wes Anderson directed it after inhaling helium.

I'll give it this. Fantastic Four is the first superhero film I've been interested in seeing since... hmm... (checks notes) ... that one with all the various Spidermen getting together along with all the baddies that come back.

But then I am a sucker for Mid-Century Modern retro-futurism and I always had a soft spot for the Fantastic Four as being inherently really difficult to adapt credibly.

I haven’t watched The Fantastic Four but isn’t that thing about the baby a great big spoiler. From the trailer old big ears sent the Silver Surfer to earth to tell them Earth had been marked for death didn’t he, and the next trailer was all about family. Yeah, well done.

Anyway, I watched some old films and I’ll spoil them for you here:

Police Story 2: Jackie Chan beats up some guys. It felt a bit tame for a JC film, to be honest.

Police Story 3: so JC says fuck it and makes an action film so fucking loud you’d swear it was the Chinese version of Commando. Honestly, you’ve gotta watch this. The explosions are AWESOME. They famously do a massive explosion in Police Story 2 where they blow up an entire smelting factory or something but here they just fucking do a shit ton of great big firey boom booms. Not so much kung fu but plenty of shooting stuff and aforesaid fire balls. They’ll never make a film like this again.

Only God Forgives: Barbie’s Ken stares off camera as stuff doesn’t happen. Beautifully shot. Glorious soundtrack of weird noises. Lots of still frames of people trying not to move. Eyeballs that don’t dart around. Ultra sexy. Violence and dismemberment. These are things that happen. An often forgotten masterpiece if you ask me.

Yes — Galactus threatens to take human infant Franklin in exchange for Earth. That’s a big plot point central to the climax. It’s absolutely spoiler territory.

Whenever I think of Ryan Gosling, I just think of him staring pointlessly into the distance and it's because of this film.

It's so so bad. It feels like something that was cobbled together during covid and it would still be inexcusable even if it was.

Weird. I just posted my thoughts on this but I must have messed up and not submitted it or whatever.

37 - 28 Years Later.

I thought this was going to be really bad. The first two films weren't great and the first five minutes of this were just so rubbish. And then all that weird editing, clashing music and that voice-over poem thing. Yuck! Unwatchable shit.

But it settled down and actually the kid's story landed with me. He was a pretty good actor and Jodie Comer did alright too.

The heart of the story had to fight against the wanky production of it all, some of the worst CGI you'll see all year (that petrol station, fuck me... really?), Aquaman zombie cock, Northern misery, the bit on the train (the stupidest fucking thing you can imagine) and a stunningly awful ending that played like a fucking sketch from Limmy.

The good outweighs the bad but this would have been a better film if almost any other director got to make it. 3/5

It's just absolutely terrible. I had to read about it because it just seemed like such an oddity and it turns out it actually was filmed during covid, which excuses the style of it but not everything else.

We watched 28 Years Later and it was a bit patchy, there were some quite good bits and some really naff bits too.

It was quite liked the poem voice over thing, it was a bit weird and jarring but it made that scene and the ones that followed really stressful viewing for me, there was a lot of tension and discomfort. This small and gritty tale was far more engaging to me than a lot of the recent 'superheroes save the world/galaxy/universe in some big spectacular showdown'. I actually cared about this young lads journey.

Some of it was WTF, shit, though.

I didn't notice this until Lady T pointed it out :/

More films I watched:

Happy Gilmore 2: I like the original. It’s alright and pretty fun. This is not alright or fun. It’s annoying and Sandler approaches this with all the energy of a divorced dad.

So then I went on a Sandler rabbit hole.

Ridiculous 6: This is probably worse than that Family Guy guy’s western … something about the West. Did you want to see a comedy where one of the running gags is that a donkey has explosive diarrhoea? Me too. Sandler loves giving himself these characters where he’s basically the best at everything. He’d suck his own dick if he could, I’ll bet. Nah, he’s probably a really nice guy. Some dumper fire films, mind.

Murder Mystery 2: I’m not 100% sure but I think the original was watchable. I lasted 20 minutes with this, and couldn’t continue with any more Sandler films.

So I went to the cinema instead.

Fantastic Four: First Steps. Surprisingly watchable for a Phase…I want to say four, maybe … film. It moves ahead quite briskly and glosses over the origin story, which I enjoyed a lot. It helped a lot that the lead characters have good chemistry. I didn’t get on with the fire guy though. I couldn’t get over that he looked like Mark Zuckerberg. I needed to tell someone but I ain’t one of those dicks that talks in the cinema. The CG was excellent and it looked and sounded fucking terrific in IMAX. I can’t imagine that you’d get a fraction of the experience watching this at home. Galactus was ace and I wanted way more of him than we actually get. He gets dealt with pretty simply in the climax which was disappointing, but what did anyone expect. He probably cost more than the rest of the film and I imagine he could just kick Earth out of orbit. It isn’t the new Infinity War but it was pretty decent. Marvel really needs to keep up this quality to get back people into the cinema and get over superhero fatigue.

Not bad enough to be good bad though?

It's just absolutely terrible. I had to read about it because it just seemed like such an oddity and it turns out it actually was filmed during covid, which excuses the style of it but not everything else.

Quite, I assumed it was just a cover for money laundering...it's appalling.
